CREF promotes original and high-impact lines of research, based on physical methods, but with a strong interdisciplinary character and in relation to the main problems of the modern knowledge society.
The CREF was born with a dual soul: a research centre and a historical museum. Its aim is to preserve and disseminate the memory of Enrico Fermi and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific culture.
Higher education and projects for young researchers
Recognizing the transformative potential of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLMs) in scientific inquiry, Centro Ricerche Enrico Fermi (CREF), in collaboration with Pi School, organized a comprehensive course to provide advanced training in these technologies to its researchers and collaborators from other universities and institutions. This initiative directly addresses the increasing demand for expertise in leveraging the power of language-based AI to accelerate discovery and innovation across various scientific disciplines, including physics.
Pi School, founded in 2017 by Translated, a global leader in language technology solutions, was established to address the critical shortage of skilled Artificial Intelligence professionals. Their expertise in delivering practical and impactful AI education makes them an ideal partner for CREF in this crucial endeavor.
The course was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application. By combining rigorous theoretical foundations with extensive hands-on exercises, the courses equipped researchers with the necessary knowledge and practical skills to effectively integrate LLM technologies into their scientific work.
Andrea Tacchella, head of research line in Artificial Intelligence at CREF, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative, stating: “Advances in AI represent not only a technological revolution but also a profound cultural transformation and intellectual challenge. These technologies have already reshaped how we live, work, and conduct research, fundamentally altering the way we make discoveries. As researchers, we have a responsibility not to remain passive in the face of this revolution but to actively shape its future.”
Driven by the positive impact and enthusiastic response to these initial courses, CREF and Pi School are committed to making this training accessible to a wider scientific community. “We believe that it is important that this experience is not unique,” concluded Tacchella. “We are committed to repeating and expanding this training, inviting researchers from diverse fields and transforming it into an opportunity not only to learn but also to exchange views and cultivate a fertile environment for new ideas and breakthroughs.”
