third mission

The CREF was born with a dual soul: a research centre and a historical museum. Its aim is to preserve and disseminate the memory of Enrico Fermi and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific culture.

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Francis Halzen, a Belgian-American physicist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, “for his fundamental contribution to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and for the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.” The announcement by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences celebrates one of the most daring scientific endeavors of the modern era, which ushered in the era of multi-messenger astronomy and includes research on cosmic rays—a fundamental topic among CREF’s research activities. Understanding cosmic radiation—building on Enrico Fermi’s theoretical and experimental legacy regarding their acceleration—represents a scientific pillar linking high-energy particle physics, the study of Earth’s atmosphere, and the exploration of the distant Universe.
