CREF promotes original and high-impact lines of research, based on physical methods, but with a strong interdisciplinary character and in relation to the main problems of the modern knowledge society.
The CREF was born with a dual soul: a research centre and a historical museum. Its aim is to preserve and disseminate the memory of Enrico Fermi and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific culture.
Higher education and projects for young researchers
Researchers from the Centro Ricerche Enrico Fermi (CREF) made significant contributions to the NetSciX 2025 Conference, a premier international gathering for network science and complex systems research. Held at the Indian Institute of Technology – Indore from January 15th to 17th, NetSciX brought together leading experts from diverse fields, including computer science, physics, mathematics, life sciences, neuroscience, environmental sciences, social sciences, economics, finance, and even the arts and design.
Andrea Zaccaria, Researcher at the Institute of Complex Systems and CREF Associate, presented innovative methodologies developed in the context of economic complexity. These methods, while initially applied to economic systems, have broader implications and can be effectively utilized to analyze other bipartite systems, such as e-commerce networks, patenting activity, and scientific innovation.
Tiziana Di Matteo, Professor of Econophysics at King’s College London and a member of the CREF Board of Directors, presented cutting-edge research on hypergraphs, moving beyond traditional pairwise interactions to explore more intricate relationships within complex systems (https://doi.org/10.3390/e26100848).
Di Matteo, who also serves as one of the Programme Chairs of NetSciX 2025, commented on the high scientific caliber of the conference:
“The overall scientific level was exceptionally high, with outstanding keynote talks, invited presentations, and contributed talks from world leaders in the field. The impressive student attendance has fostered very fruitful and stimulating discussions.”
