The Enrico Fermi Research Center - CREF promotes original and high-impact lines of research, based on physical methods, but with a strong interdisciplinary character and in relation to the main problems of the modern knowledge society.
The CREF was born with a dual soul: a research centre and a historical museum. Its aim is to preserve and disseminate the memory of Enrico Fermi and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific culture.

The CREF Physics Laboratory for Cultural Heritage is dedicated to studying materials of historical and artistic interest using non-invasive and non-destructive analysis techniques. It is located on floor -1 of the building. The lab is currently equipped with instruments for X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRaman, XGlab- Bruker), Raman spectroscopy (XRaman, XGlab- Bruker), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR Nicolet IS5 Conservat-IR, Thermo Fisher Scientific), and hyperspectral imaging (IQ Specim – Konica Minolta).
The laboratory also has dedicated workstations with significant computing power for analyzing imaging data with specialized software (VGStudio Max, Volumegraphics), as well as smaller equipment like an analytical lab balance, a desiccator, standard samples, a press, reagents, an oven, and basic materials.
The lab also has the consumables necessary to carry out experiments. To expand its diagnostic capabilities, the laboratory plans to acquire a system for imaging, specifically X-ray Computed Tomography (CT). This will allow for the examination of the internal structure of objects without altering their integrity. CT will make it possible to identify inclusions, cavities, defects, and multi-layered structures, providing inaccessible details with other techniques. The data collected will also allow for the creation of 3D models for advanced analysis through developing new research protocols and for museum enhancement. Adopting this technology will strengthen the lab’s research activities, promoting cooperation with other institutions in the fields of knowledge, protection, and enjoyment of cultural heritage.
