CREF promotes original and high-impact lines of research, based on physical methods, but with a strong interdisciplinary character and in relation to the main problems of the modern knowledge society.
The CREF was born with a dual soul: a research centre and a historical museum. Its aim is to preserve and disseminate the memory of Enrico Fermi and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific culture.
Higher education and projects for young researchers
I obtained a degree in Physics and a Doctorate in Biophysics at Sapienza University in Rome. I have been conducting research at CREF since 2004. I have been Principal Researcher since 2015 and Research Director since 2022. In this capacity, I coordinate a group of medical physicists working on the structure and function of the human brain and the development of related magnetic resonance imaging methods. My research activity is strongly oriented towards interdisciplinary approaches to neuroscience and neuroimaging.
My research interests include human brain function, metabolism, and relevant alterations in some neurological diseases. My experimental work uses functional MRI and spectroscopy to characterise metabolic, functional and network transients during brain activity. I am also interested in computational neuroscience, particularly quantitative models of intercellular nutrient trafficking, aimed at understanding the biophysical basis of functional neuroimaging and elucidating the functional and energetic partnership between cell populations in the brain.
Since 2020, I have been the Coordinator of high-field MRI research at the Santa Lucia Foundation in Rome.
