CREF promotes original and high-impact lines of research, based on physical methods, but with a strong interdisciplinary character and in relation to the main problems of the modern knowledge society.
The CREF was born with a dual soul: a research centre and a historical museum. Its aim is to preserve and disseminate the memory of Enrico Fermi and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific culture.
Higher education and projects for young researchers
FLASH Radiotherapy, especially with charged particles, has emerged as a promising new approach in radiation therapy, offering the potential to reduce side effects while maintaining tumor control. However, significant research is still needed to translate this concept into clinical practice.
The FRIDA Project (Flash Radiotherapy with hIgh Dose-rate particle beAms) is a pioneering initiative aimed at translating the potential of FLASH radiotherapy into clinical reality. By addressing key challenges such as understanding its underlying mechanisms, developing advanced acceleration and delivery techniques, and creating precise monitoring and planning tools in Italy, FRIDA is paving the way for a new era in cancer treatment.
On December 2-3 the Enrico Fermi Research Center hosted the FRIDA meeting. During the day of December 3rd there will be two interventions with external speakers of international prominence: Prof. Brian Pogue “Radiation Chemical measurements in vitro and intra- & extra-cellular in vivo at CONV and UHDR conditions” and Prof. Pierre Montay Gruel “FLASH potential for the treatment of Breast Cancer”. The most important international conference on radiotherapy FLASH: FRPT 2024 – Flash Radiotherapy and Particle Therapy Conference will take place in Rome immediately after the FRIDA meeting.
