CREF Team achieves Second Place at CodeFest 2024 for Generative AI Project
A research team comprised of researchers from CREF (Andrea Tacchella, Enrico Fenoaltea, and Filippo Santoro), along with collaborators from the University of Konstanz (Giordano De Marzo and Segun Aroyehu), achieved an impressive second-place finish at CodeFest 2024 in the Generative AI category. The top winners were announced on December 4th at the EPO’s Patent Knowledge Forum, a major event for the patent information community.
Leveraging Generative AI to Analyze Patents and Predict Innovation
The CodeFest competition challenged participants to develop projects using generative AI for patent analysis. This CREF-Konstanz team focused on exploring the potential of generative AI to analyze patent data and predict future technological advancements. Their project centered around a visualization tool that utilizes patent embeddings. This innovative approach involves encoding patent text into high-dimensional vectors, allowing the tool to create a low-dimensional visual representation of patent clusters. This visualization facilitates the identification of trends and potential future combinations of technologies.
Interactive Data Visualization Platform for Exploring Innovation Trends
The team went beyond the analysis stage and built a user-friendly data visualization platform that allows users to interactively explore the results of the patent analysis, providing valuable insights into potential future technological developments.

CodeFest is a series of coding competitions organized by the European Patent Office (EPO) that leverage patent data to address real-world challenges. By providing access to the EPO’s vast data resources and services, CodeFest empowers developers to innovate and develop solutions to contemporary problems.
