The Enrico Fermi Research Center - CREF promotes original and high-impact lines of research, based on physical methods, but with a strong interdisciplinary character and in relation to the main problems of the modern knowledge society.
The CREF was born with a dual soul: a research centre and a historical museum. Its aim is to preserve and disseminate the memory of Enrico Fermi and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific culture.

The scientific activities of CREF and its three-year activity plan are developed in full coherence with the aims and objectives contained in the PNR 2021-2027 (National Research Program). Consequently, all the institution’s structural projects have been conceived with the aim of making a tangible contribution to the country’s development, in conformity with the PNR.
In particular, many of these projects are strongly interdisciplinary and innovative, based on data-driven methodologies, and have a strong international connotation. Some of their scientific activities, such as the joint initiative with the Sony CSL—Rome at CREF, primarily focus on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Together with the recent agreement with the United Nations University—Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT), these activities characterise CREF as a top-tier international hub. All scientific projects also aim to enhance and promote the contribution of young researchers to scientific endeavours.
