third mission

The CREF was born with a dual soul: a research centre and a historical museum. Its aim is to preserve and disseminate the memory of Enrico Fermi and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific culture.

Pablo Villegas

I have been a Researcher at CREF since September 2023. My work focuses on complex systems, ranging from biology to the theory of self-organized criticality, with both a theoretical and applicative approach.

From a theoretical point of view, I contributed to defining mesoscopic models for the dynamics of the cortex, analysing Griffiths phases in complex networks, and formulating the Laplacian Renormalization Group. In the applied field, I conducted in-depth analyses of emerging patterns in tropical forests, including those of Barro Colorado in Panama.

Currently, my work focuses on two main research areas:  developing group renormalization methodologies applied to complex networks and deepening the understanding of emergent phenomena in such systems; the analysis of neurological and ecological data under the lens of statistical physics, thus helping to reveal the fundamental principles that govern the dynamics of such complex systems.
