The Enrico Fermi Research Center - CREF promotes original and high-impact lines of research, based on physical methods, but with a strong interdisciplinary character and in relation to the main problems of the modern knowledge society.
The CREF was born with a dual soul: a research centre and a historical museum. Its aim is to preserve and disseminate the memory of Enrico Fermi and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific culture.

On 20 February, in the Fermi Hall of the Institute, the CREF project update presentations were held for the Scientific Council — composed of Halina Abramowicz, Maria José Garcia Borge, Federico Giove, Karl Grandin and Luciano Pietronero — and for the Internal Evaluation Committee — consisting of Luc Bergé, Luisa Cifarelli and Marco Durante. This annual event marked the second official meeting for both bodies, recently appointed, following the session held last February.
The meeting was opened by the President of CREF, Angela Bracco, who illustrated the developments of the research lines, traditionally characterised by a strong interdisciplinary approach and organised into four macro-areas: Applied Physics, Fundamental Physics, Complexity, and the Fermi Museum. A significant part of the update concerned the expansion of the research laboratories: the renovation work in the underground wing that currently houses CREF is nearing completion and will enable new scientific activities. Important news was also shared regarding the section of the building awaiting refurbishment, for which the planned redevelopment process is now taking shape.
The President then gave the floor to Luisa Cifarelli, former President of the Enrico Fermi Research Centre, who — with a heartfelt tribute — recalled the life and work of Antonino Zichichi, an internationally renowned physicist and a key figure in the history of the Institute, recently passed away.
The day, chaired in the morning by Fabrizio Coccetti, member of the Board of Directors, and in the afternoon by Vittorio Loreto, Director of Sony CSL Laboratories, continued with presentations by the Institute’s researchers, each responsible for their respective projects. The groups illustrated the progress achieved, the latest results, and the future objectives of the ongoing activities. The session dedicated to the Fermi Museum also included contributions from the young research fellows involved in educational projects aimed at primary school students.
The meeting concluded with an address by CREF’s Scientific Director, Salvatore De Pasquale, who reviewed the projects presented, highlighting future development prospects and outlining a comprehensive overview of the research carried out at CREF: cutting-edge scientific work combined with the enhancement of the legacy of Enrico Fermi and the historic Via Panisperna group.
