third mission

The CREF was born with a dual soul: a research centre and a historical museum. Its aim is to preserve and disseminate the memory of Enrico Fermi and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific culture.

CREF Hosts the Editorial Board Meeting of the European Physical Journal (EPJ)

On June 11 and 12, the Enrico Fermi Research Centre (CREF) hosted the Editorial Board Meeting of the European Physical Journal (EPJ). The meeting represented an important opportunity for scientific and institutional exchange, bringing together in Rome the editorial board members of the journals EPJB – Condensed Matter and Complex Systems and EPJE – Soft, Liquid and Living Systems.

The proceedings opened with institutional greetings and an introduction by the President of CREF, Angela Bracco, who welcomed the participants and highlighted the value of international scientific cooperation and the Centre’s pride in hosting such a prestigious working group.

Scientific Contributions

During the session, several significant presentations took place, including:

  • Reinhold Egger (co-EiC of EPJB): introduced the proceedings with a talk titled “From Quantum to Classical, from Equilibrium to Complexity: The Shared Ground of EPJB and EPJE”.

  • Pablo Villegas (CREF researcher): gave a talk titled “Toward a renormalization theory of multiscale organization in complex systems”, illustrating the cutting-edge research lines carried out within the Center in the study of complex systems.

Among the participants in attendance were also Tiziana De Matteo (editorial board member of EPJB and member of the Board of Directors of CREF) and Giovanna Fragneto (editorial board member of EPJE and Scientific Director of the European Spallation Source), who took the opportunity to visit CREF’s cultural heritage physics laboratory.

Working Sessions

The morning session on June 11 concluded with a roundtable discussion moderated by Davide Migliorini. In the afternoon and throughout the day of June 12, the Editorial Board’s work continued in closed sessions within the historic walls of CREF, alternating between the Aula Fermi and the Aula Touschek, to discuss the editorial perspectives and scientific strategies of the EPJB and EPJE journals.

Hosting an event of international scope reaffirms CREF’s role as a benchmark hub and a space of excellence for knowledge sharing and the development of interdisciplinary physics and complex systems.
