The Enrico Fermi Research Center - CREF promotes original and high-impact lines of research, based on physical methods, but with a strong interdisciplinary character and in relation to the main problems of the modern knowledge society.
The CREF was born with a dual soul: a research centre and a historical museum. Its aim is to preserve and disseminate the memory of Enrico Fermi and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific culture.

The Fostering Research Synergies (FRS) workshop is back for its fourth edition, continuing its tradition as a self-organised platform built by PhD students and early-career researchers for their peers, to explore complex systems and how science connects to the world around us.
Born from a collaboration between IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca and CREF (Rome), FRS has evolved into a small yet vibrant community where young researchers from physics, computer science, economics, social sciences, and many other fields come together on equal footing to exchange ideas, share their work, and initiate new collaborations.
Over the past editions, hosted both in Lucca and in the historic CREF building in Rome, the workshop has experimented with informal discussion sessions, interactive group activities, and creative formats designed to break disciplinary and institutional boundaries.
The 2025 edition will take place on 18–19 December at the Complesso di San Francesco (Sagrestia) at IMT Lucca. True to the spirit of the workshop, this year’s programme will again combine scientific talks with hands-on brainstorming, quizzes, and collaborative writing, introducing new and surprising elements to strengthen further the FRS network and its connection to the broader IMT–CREF community.
