Fostering Research Synergies v2.0 (FRS2024)

The IMT/CREF PhD and Early Researchers Workshop

AULA FERMI, 20-21-22-november 2024

The “Fostering Research Synergies” workshop is a self-organized event that brings together young researchers and PhD students from the Enrico Fermi Research Center (CREF) in Rome and the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca. Both institutions are dedicated to studying complex systems, covering a wide spectrum of disciplines, including neuroscience, social dynamics, urban systems, economic complexity, and network science. The workshop aims to ease connections and collaboration among emerging scientists in a supportive and informal environment that encourages productive discussions and a rewarding academic experience.

The event began last year, with the first edition v1.0 held at IMT in Lucca, followed by an intermediate gathering (v1.X) at the Complexity Science Hub (CSH) in Vienna. This year, the workshop returns to CREF, where participants will share their research to deepen mutual understanding and foster collaboration across institutions. The workshop will include individual research presentations and panel sessions primarily aimed at understanding each other’s research and discovering overlapping research interests. The sessions will also explore topics relevant to early-career scientists, ranging from academic well-being to scientific production and collaboration.

This year, two-panel discussions are planned, addressing research integration and broader themes of interest to the academic community, such as interdisciplinary challenges and career development in academia. The workshop includes participants not only from CREF and IMT but also from CSH, further extending the collaborative network. By encouraging open dialogue and joint initiatives, “Fostering Research Synergies” aims to inspire collaboration among young researchers and early-career scientists, nurturing the next wave of methodological and theoretical innovation in complex systems.

The invited speakers are Matteo Bruno (Urban Studies and Mobility Systems, CREF), Dario Mazzilli (Economic Complexity, CREF), Tommaso Gili (Neuroscience and Neural Networks, IMT), and Fabio Saracco (Social Networks, CREF), each of whom will provide insights into their respective fields.
