The legacy of Enrico Fermi. The challenges of the future

about us

third mission

The CREF was born with a dual soul: a research centre and a historical museum. Its aim is to preserve and disseminate the memory of Enrico Fermi and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific culture.

Romolo Savo

I am a researcher at CREF and an associate researcher at the Institute of Complex Systems ISC-CNR in Rome. My research concerns complex photonic materials, from their fabrication to experimental optical investigation to the development of numerical models.

My scientific interest aims to investigate the fundamental laws regulating optical transport and coherent nonlinear phenomena in complex photonic structures, mainly characterized by photonic disorder.

A further objective is to engineer the photonic complexity starting from individual nanophotonic elements (such as nanoparticles) with bottom-up manufacturing techniques to obtain efficient but more environmentally sustainable photonic devices.

I am a permanent member of the CREF Computational Photonics laboratory, whereI investigate the use of complex photonic materials as hardware platforms for machine learning and neuromorphic optical computing.

In 2023, I won the funded Young Researchers -MSCA call from the European Union (Next Generation EU) and from the PNRR fund with the Comp-SECOONDO project focused on the line of research developed at CREF.
I obtained a degree in Physics at the University of Naples “Federico II” and a PhD at the European Laboratory of Nonlinear Spectroscopy (LENS) of the University of Florence.

I was a postdoc researcher at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris and a postdoc researcher at the ETH in Zurich with a Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant, where I also held the position of adjunct professor (Lecturer).

My scientific production includes contributions to the most prestigious international scientific journals (Science, Nature Photonics, Nature Communication, PRL). I have co-authored 18 peer-reviewed articles and more than 30 contributions to
international conferences.

I am a member of the editorial panel “Spotlight in Optics” of the Optical Society of America and a scientific reviewer for international journals in optics and physics (PRL, Optica, etc). I supervised doctoral, master and bachelor theses. I have an index of h = 11 and more than 470 citations (Scholar).
